They just don't care: What really happens when we walk away from a loved one's care home? Our reporter worked at one undercover - and the cruel truth appalled him

In a shocking Mail on Sunday investigation, undercover reporter Simon Murphy (inset bottom left) learned first-hand how badly elderly and vulnerable people can be treated by staff at care homes.

The journalist spent three weeks working at Avonpark Village (bottom right) in Wiltshire, where he witnessed staff (main, top right) making fun of a 96-year-old woman with dementia after she tried to get their attention.

He also saw residents at the £4,000-per-month care home confined to their rooms because there were not enough carers to help them reach communal areas, while others were called names and disrespected behind their backs.

The investigation also revealed how much homes are depending on agency workers to plug gaps left by full-time staff shortages, while on-the-job training never took place and supervision was minimal.
