Soldiers who tortured teenager won’t be dismissed despite being found guilty

The Ghana Armed Forces says it won’t sack two soldiers who tortured a teenager they accused of stealing a mobile phone even though they have been found guilty.

The Chief of Defence Staff, Air Vice Marshal Oje Sampson, who commissioned an internal probe into the harrowing incident told Joy News Friday, he is open to reducing the ranks of the two military men.

Ghanaians expressed outrage through mainstream media and social media after it was established that the soldiers at Kamina barracks in the Northern region tortured an errand boy, Christopher Bamah for at least five hours.

They had accused him of stealing a mobile phone and brutalized him until he fell unconscious. He also suffered internal organ damages and was rushed to a clinic.

After he condition failed to improve, the teenager who could barely sit, made a 10-hour journey to Accra for further treatment.

His story broke on Joy FM's Super Morning Show April 22 and has since brought the Ghana Armed Forces under media scrutiny.

More than one month since the April 4 brutality, the CHief of Defence Staff Air Marshal (AM) Michael Samson-Oje says punitive measures will be taken against the soldiers who were not under any command when they melted black polythene until it dripped over Christopher Bamah's body.

AM Michael Samson-Oje indicated that the soldiers would be detained as punishment. The Army could also reduce the ranks of the soldiers who are Corporals of 6th Battalion of Infantry.

But sacking them as clamoured for by sections of the public would amount to a loss to the Ghana Armed Forces.

The Army has spent years investing in the training of the soldiers, he told Joy News' Joseph Gakpo.

The army chief pointed out that the Corporals if sacked could resort to armed robbery, having the benefit of superior military training.

Meanwhile, the Commission on Human Rights and Administrate Justice (CHRAJ) has been petitioned by the family of the 16-year-old boy.

Lawyer for the family Francis Xavier Sosu, has also indicated that the family is also considering filing a suit against the Ghana Armed Forces.
