Mystery of Flight MS804: EgyptAir now say NO wreckage has been found and Pentagon says they have NO indication of an explosion on the plane that 'plunged 22,000ft into the sea with 66 on board'

EgyptAir has tonight retracted its claims that the wreckage of the downed Flight MS804 had been discovered floating in the Mediterranean Sea, as the mystery surrounding the missing passenger jet escalates.

It comes as U.S. authorities say they have so far been unable to find any indication that an explosion took place on board the plane before it allegedly plunged 22,000ft into the sea.

International efforts have combined to cast light on what happened to the plane, which had 66 people on board, in its final moments.

Pictures posted online this afternoon purportedly show debris (inset) from the doomed Airbus A320.

The images emerged as search vessels reported seeing large objects floating in the sea around 230 miles south of the island of Crete.

Greek defence minister Panos Kammenos said flight MS804 disappeared after going into a sudden spin and plunging 22,000ft before vanishing off the radar at 00.30am GMT without making a distress call.

Relatives gathered at Cairo International Airport (right) to await news of the 56 passengers on board, with included one Briton, 30 Egyptians, 15 French, one Belgian, one Iraqi, one Kuwaiti, one Saudi Arabian, one Chadian, one Portuguese, one Algerian and one Canadian.
