Woman in court for murdering grandson

A 35-year old woman who allegedly murdered her three-week old grandson at Akotokyir, a suburb of Cape Coast, in Ghana has been remanded in Police custody by a magistrate’s court in Cape Coast.

The move is to enable the Police to conduct further investigations into the case.

The plea of Grace Amoah alias Esi Yeboaba, a mother of five, was not taken and she would be re-arraigned on Thursday, April 21.

Police Chief Inspector Christina Sampong, who prosecuted, told the court presided over by Gloria Mensah Bonsu that, the complainant, Joyce Amoah, was the eldest child of the accused, Grace Amoah and also the mother of the murdered baby.

She said Joyce, a 17-year old JHS dropout and her three- week old baby lived in a one room apartment with her mother, Grace at Akotokyir, a suburb of Cape Coast.

She said on, Tuesday, April 5, at about 8PM, Joyce woke up to notice that her baby who was lying beside her was missing.

Chief Inspector Sampong told the court that Joyce confronted Grace but she denied any knowledge or the whereabouts of her baby and out of desperation and suspicion reported the case to the police.

She said Police investigations revealed that Grace murdered the baby in the night and secretly buried the corpse behind a public toilet in the town.

She said Grace was arrested and the body of the deceased has since been deposited at the hospital pending autopsy.

According to prosecution, Grace in her caution statement to the Police denied killing the baby but admitted burying it secretly after she discovered the baby was dead.
