Pope Francis today greeted a dozen Syrian refugees on their arrival in Rome after he rescued them from a camp in Lesbos following a visit to the Greek island to highlight the humanitarian crisis.
The three families fled Damascus and the ISIS stronghold of Deir el-Zour after their homes were bombed.
The six adults and six children were brought to Italy as a 'gesture of welcome'. Pope Francis flew to Lesbos this morning to highlight the refugee crisis where he toured a refugee camp in Moria along with the Greek orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew, top left.
Many of the refugees were visibly emotional as they met the pontiff, right, who urged European leaders to follow his example. He said: 'Today I renew my heartfelt plea for responsibility and solidarity in the face of this tragic situation.'
